The M O’Brien Story: Fleet Regeneration Made Possible with Ritchie Bros.

September 17, 2025

Ritchie Bros. UK is thrilled to announce our new partnership with M O’Brien Plant Hire, a name synonymous with quality and professionalism in the UK construction industry.

A Few Words on M O’Brien Plant Hire

The story of M O’Brien Plant Hire is a testament to dedication and hard work. It begins with Michael O’Brien, who, at just 19 years old, moved to England and found his start as a groundworks labourer. With a natural passion for machinery, he learned to operate machines during lunch breaks and soon earned his own seat. In 1990, alongside his wife Annamarie, he formed M O’Brien Plant Hire with a single JCB 3CX, run from their back garden in Luton. The business grew so rapidly that they soon had 11 JCBs operating from their home, which, as you can imagine, wasn’t a hit with the neighbours! This early success led to the purchase of their first official yard.

Today, that single machine has grown into a fleet of over 900 pieces of equipment. The company now employs over 50 office staff and around 900 plant operators nationwide. M O’Brien’s reach extends far beyond its St. Albans base, providing a “one-stop plant solution” for some of the biggest names in construction, including Balfour Beatty, Skanska, and Morgan Sindall.

This incredible growth is driven by a professional and forward-thinking philosophy. M O’Brien Plant Hire is renowned for investing in only the best machinery and employing the most skilled and experienced operatives. This commitment ensures their clients receive a high-quality, reliable service every time. This dedication to excellence is at the heart of their new fleet regeneration strategy, which focuses on providing the most sustainable, efficient, and productive solutions for their clients’ projects.

Why Partner with Ritchie Bros.?

The decision to partner with Ritchie Bros. was a strategic one, aimed at streamlining the process and aligning with their commitment to sustainability.

Michael O’Brien, founder of M O’Brien Plant Hire: “Our ongoing fleet regeneration strategy is all about ensuring our customers have access to the most sustainable, efficient, and modern equipment on the market. Partnering with Ritchie Bros. to manage this renewal was the clear choice — their global reach and trusted track record give us the confidence that our equipment will be showcased to the widest possible audience of buyers, all from the convenience of our own yard. This auction marks an important step in our commitment to innovation and sustainability, and we look forward to a successful sale and continued partnership.”

Dan O’Brien, Director, M O’Brien Plant Hire: “The sustainability of our operation is a key consideration in every business decision we make. Holding this auction directly from our yard is a massive move for us, eliminating the need to transport over 250 items to another location. This not only makes the process significantly more efficient but also dramatically reduces our carbon footprint by cutting out a huge number of lorry movements. It’s a huge step towards our green ambitions and a perfect example of how our partnership with Ritchie Bros. helps us achieve our strategic goals.”

From the Ritchie Bros. perspective, this partnership is a significant testament to the value of their offsite auction service and the team that delivers it.

Rupert Craven, Sales Director for Ritchie Bros.: “We are incredibly proud to partner with a company of
M O’Brien’s stature and history. This collaboration demonstrates the trust that leading plant hire firms place in our ability to deliver a seamless, effective, and tailored selling solution. By bringing the auction directly to the client’s location, we provide certainty of sale and attract a massive global buyer base, all while aligning with our customers’ strategic objectives.”

The on-site auction was a perfect example of the strong collaboration between the two teams. James O’Donnell specifically praised the support, adding: “Having our own Plant maintenance team preparing and seamlessly handing equipment over to the Ritchie team for photography and listing online has sped up the time to market significantly.”

Ryan Duffy, Ritchie Bros. UK Area Manager: “A big thank you to Michael, Dan, James O’Donnell, and the entire M O’Brien team for their partnership. It’s a fantastic mix of equipment, and we are excited to work together to deliver exceptional results.”

This auction provides a prime opportunity for buyers to acquire, well-maintained equipment while helping M O’Brien continue its journey of growth and innovation.

The upcoming sale will take place on the 15th October through www.rbauction.co.uk
